The DRDOS _is_ much more solid than MSDOS5, since I've used both. DRDOS is
more forgiving. We use it across multiple platforms: Compaq, Zen ith, IBM,
PS-2, Swan, ALR, no problems to speak of. Also, DRI's next release is heads
and shoulders above MSDOS5.

Hi Steve, Have you or anyone else used Norton 5.0 Diskreet.sys with DRDOS? I
had played with it a while back under a different OS without problems.
Yesterday I attempted to create an encrypted partition and the creation
process would fail. This is probably a Norton problem that may be OK in NU
6.0 ( my copy on order ) but I was just curious.

You ought to take the time to leave that message in the Microsoft MSDOS v5.0

fish that are being caught by Msoft and Mr. Bill.

Has any problems with DR-DOS and floppy drives on laptops been reported? We
have a Packard Bell 286 Notebook (20 Meg) and whenever the floppy drive is
requested the system always instructs the user to insert the proper diskette
into the drive. The diskette was already in the drive.
This sounds like the MS-DOS drive A & B in one drive problem, but it is not.
We are only using as drive A: and no requests for drive B:.
Packard Bell Tech Support has advised us that the problem is in DR-DOS. But,
with running DR-DOS with a few other machines here we do not have that
problem.
Any suggests or comments?

To all: Please offer a comparison between DRDOS 5.0 and MSDOS 5.0. All the
hype seems to be centering around Gates and their new product vs DRDOS which
has been out much longer. Also, what will DRDOS 6.0 contain to better the
MSDOS entry? Thanks.

Charles -
DRI has been handing out in NY at PC EXPO all week a 2-sided sheet comparing
DR DOS 5.0 and MS DOS 5.0, feature by feature. Pretty good and alomst
complete (found an item or 2 missing). I have asked the Sysop here to see if
that could be scanned in to a Lib here for downloading by interested parties.
T'would be a lot to type. Let me tell you, as most of us have discovered in
doing our own comparisons, DR DOS wins.
Also, in July 91 PC WORLD MS DOS 5.0 reviewer who is favorable to MS 5 says
DR DOS does lot more, although out almost a year earlier. He also claims
that MS did ver 5 because DRI did such a great job on DR 5 and they couldn't
let it pass unchallenged, but didn't surpass it!

When using DRDOS accross a network with XTGOLD, I don't get all the

local drive.
Is there some patch or configuration to remedy this?
The network I'm using is Lantasti.

Try DRIVPARMs first, and if that doesn't work, try DRIVER.sys. One or
the other of those should do the trick. Good luck.

Thanks. We have discovered the problem, just after I left the message. It
seems that the program he was using, told the system to go to B:, which was
not there, so the system used the only floppy as B:. But, not insert disk
prompt appeared. Maybe the program handled it.
When he finally went to A:, DOS popped a message to insert the diskette in.
This was causing all of the problems. Well, it was related to the software
and the problem is now identifed and solved.

Hi Steve, I found the problem with Diskreet (Norton). It had nothing to do
with DRDOS. I have been testing a shareware cache program called Hyperdisk,
from MSOPSYS forum (forget what lib). It seems that Diskreet and Hyperdisk
do not play together. I seem to have no problem using an existing Diskreet
partition but I get a hard lockup (red button type) when I try to create a
new Diskreet partition with Hyperdisk loaded. The result is the same if I
disable the cache before attempting to create the new partition. I must boot
without loading Hyperdisk for a successful create.
Please pass this info to anyone who may use both of these otherwise fine
programs.

If you are using disk manager, get rid of it. I had an old copy that
made a 286 crawl with DRD5. Rather than go through the hassel of getting a
new version of DM (mine was 1985 I think?) I just gave up 4 meg on each

CompUSAs. It seems like all the CompUSAs are having this special. You just
have to ask for the "Toss Your DOS" upgrade pkg. or they quote you the full

trying to find the magical combination of files in order to maximize the use
of upper memory. Will the next version be a little easier to maximize space.
PS I don't like using QEMM because it doesn't appear to like extended
applications(cache vdisk). Seems like EXT= in their book acts opposite in the
computer I would prefer to use EMM if I could restructure upper memory
easier(i.e. I don't want to be a manual "optimize" program Also I am running
GEM applications from a pulldowm menu system. When I was using 3.3 I put a
command to call GEM as COMMAND /c gem. This way when I exited from GEM it
would return to the pulldown menu. It didn't like it in drdos so I looked a
little farther and discovered that I was creating a secondary command
processor that takes up room. How can I call GEM.bat from another menu
program so it will restart the menu system when I exit GEM. Last question,
do you plan on giving the ability to Viewmax to create new custom icons.

Sure would be nice to know whom I am replying to. Include your name if you
please. At this point, you do have to do some manual optimizing to get the
most from EMM386 and Hidevice and Hiload commands. We do not have a specific
command to optimize. I have heard that QEMM does not like our Cache or VDISK
but have not verified that. I suspect if exiting GEM does not return you to
where you cam from, you could put the command at the end of the GEM.BAT to
make the system reload the menu. I do not know if Viewmax will get the
